Hugs and Trolls

Don’t know about you, but after all these great sessions, I’m looking forward to the socialising side of SMC….

Nice one Whatleydude – good session on social media outreach – now everyone expects a group hug when the bar opens.

Love Chris Applegate’s Trolling preso – really lifts the lid on a few things that we all sweep under the carpet in social media.  But hang on a minute, he’s blown it – HE’S JUST SAID HE USED TO TROLL WHEN HE WAS 15 – but he’s a reformed troll….so all forgiven.

Great session. Great discussion

Beers, beers, beers

@nixdminx

great sessions – so much to talk about

smcstart

SMCLondon is rocking – I’ve been in three great sessions so far today and it’s great to hear the conversations taking place.

First, How to socialise Indie movies, was the Dogwoof Indie session run by Andy.  He told me he got lots of great ideas out of it and is ’still learning’.  He was overwhelmed with new concepts and wants to put into practise what he has garnered today as well as listen more to the community.   Well, I’m telling you now that we tried to bully him into doing an internet-only launch for his next movie so keep an eye out at his web site to see if he keeps his promise.  Meet him on the photo scavenger hunt later to pressgang him further…

And the second one I attended, which was run by Vero – PRs are after your Soul -  had a very different flavour and a lot of opinions to put on the table.  Basically are agencies getting it really wrong or sometimes right when engaging in social media PR? was really what we were discussing.   A lively session and lots of debate and tweets throughout, means this topic is not going away for a long time.

The third session was with Lucia and Joanna from The Times.  They told the story of how they moderated the flash community that sprung up on the Times Online around the G20 Summit and the online news feed.  It was a pretty interesting talk on how community moderation can be seen as censorship under the captainship of Murdoch.  Funny that, when the reality that Lucia and Joanna had to deal with on the day was completely different.  The editorial team was overwhelmed with a deluge of comments and coded messages.  So what are the rules of engagement moving forward for commenting and community moderation in the media?  Let’s wait and see – there is no clear path forward quite yet but the general opinion is that each audience has a different set of rules.

In the meantime, join us in the Dogleg room for the Something Silly session – it’s a game of 21 – it’s getting a bit kinky!

Ciao for now!

Tickets gone, down to waiting list now

A swarm of geeks descended upon Eventbrite last Wednesday and this morning, with tickets for SMC disappearing in mere minutes; 9 minutes for the first lot, 2 for the second! Simply amazing.

Now, this leaves many of you without tickets. For this I do apologise, I would love to invite every single person who’s interested. Next time, we most likely will look for a larger venue to accommodate more of us.

In the meantime, if I could ask you to form a neat line below in comments if you’d like to be on the waiting list. Obviously, be sure to include your email address so that we can contact you. Please also state which day(s) you’d like to attend. [Note: If you've already emailed me to request to be put on the waiting list, consider it done.]

When we get drop outs or cancellations, we’ll contact you directly to let you know you’re in!

As a further note, we are still short in sponsorships in order to cover our costs for Sunday as well as for tshirts, so please shake your boss upside down to get a few quid out if you can and put them in touch with me.

Thanks and looking forward to the event!

Reminder: Wallacespace St Pancras, not Covent Garden

Since we’ve had a change of venue and are using the larger Wallacespace St Pancras venue, this is a reminder for everyone to come to the right venue!

Wallacespace St Pancras, 22 Duke’s Road, WC1H 9PN

The location is 5 minutes walk from King’s Cross Station, heading West on Euston Road, turn the corner at the purple Premier Inn. You’ll see a yellow building and a blue door

SMC London – First Newsletter

The first newsletter to participants and volunteers for SocialMediaCamp London went out this afternoon, kindly sponsored by the folks at Campaign Monitor. So hello to everyone who’s visiting this site for the first time!

If you missed out on it, you can see the online version of the email here or subscribe via the sidebar box on the left to ensure you get the next one.

What is SocialMediaCamp London?

What is a BarCamp?

The BarCamp wiki says that “BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants.”

Generally speaking, it’s an opportunity to get together with other people passionate about a given topic, whether it’s WordPress, cupcakes or social media, and exchange ideas and experiences. It’s a great way to build up a network, jump-start your career and have a bit of fun along the way.

As BarCamps are organised by volunteers, sponsors help cover the costs and provide a venue.

What is SocialMediaCamp London all about?

The aim of SocialMediaCamp London is to gather people from all walks of life, levels of expertise and industries together to meet in a social environment. There will be presentations, panels, brainstorms, experiments and mashups. There will be whatever you decide, because it’s our joint responsibility to make the most of this opportunity.

What do you want to get out of it?

Are there rules for participation?

BarCamps are unconferences and are inherently informal and focused around socialising, but there are a few rules:

  • Arrive with an open mind and ideas to share
  • Participate: Whether it’s facilitating a panel, contributing with questions, promoting the event, helping serve lunch or clearing up at the end, please give a hand.
  • Work to your strengths, but don’t fear your weaknesses: If you’re already a master of your art, blog about the event, take photos, etc but use the weekend as an opportunity to try something you’ve never done, like a podcast interview or leading a panel.
  • We’re all hosts: If anyone nearby looks a bit shy, why not say hi and introduce yourself?
  • Sponsors are strongly encouraged to participate. We want your money, but we also want your ideas, experience and participation. :)

In summary:

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers.
When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

Welcome to the SocialMediaCamp London blog
